The Wellness Basics Still Matter

There is always something new promising to fix our health.

A new supplement. A new diet. A new protocol. A new challenge. A new biohack.

And listen, I am not against learning new things. I love finding helpful tools. I love simple wellness support. I love seeing what actually works in real life.

But this time of year, especially as summer begins and life shifts out of the regular homeschool rhythm, I keep coming back to one simple truth:

The basics still matter

Before we overcomplicate wellness, it helps to ask a few honest questions.

Are you sleeping?

Are you drinking enough water?

Are you eating enough protein and real food?

Are you moving your body in ways that work for this season?

Are you doing anything at all to lower stress?

These are not flashy questions. They are not exciting. They do not make for dramatic before-and-after stories by the end of the week.

But they matter. Totally matter.

And for many of us, especially homeschool moms trying to wrap up a school year, manage summer schedules, and keep a home running, these simple things are often the first to slip.

Summer can feel lighter, but it can also feel messy

I opened this month thinking about “the summer I want to feel.” Not just the summer I want to plan, but the summer I want to actually live.

And if I am being honest, I am not all the way there yet.

I still have a few homeschool things to button up before I can officially call our year done. I need to create objectives for next year and finish the final little pieces that make everything feel complete in my mind. Once that is done, I know I will breathe a little easier.

I also have big plans for our schoolroom. I am hoping that when my son is at camp next week, I can pull everything out, clean it thoroughly, and organize it well. That kind of reset always helps me feel calmer.

But even in the middle of unfinished projects, I keep noticing that what I need most is not a perfect system. It is not more pressure. It is not trying to do all the things at once.

What I need most is to come back to the basics.

Real life wellness is usually simpler than we make it

Lately I have been thinking a lot about how easy it is to believe we need to do more to get healthier.

More pills. More supplements. More rules. More plans. More tracking. More effort.

But sometimes the answer is not more. Sometimes it is less, done more consistently.

That has been on my mind in a very personal way lately, because I am honestly tired of taking so many supplements and pills. If you have ever felt like your whole wellness routine could qualify as a part-time job, you know what I mean.

I want wellness to feel supportive, not exhausting.

I want it to fit into daily life.

I want it to feel sustainable.

I want simple habits that actually help.

That is part of why I keep coming back to foundational support and why I think this message matters so much right now, especially in summer. Summer can be a really good time to simplify. To strip things back. To notice what is actually helping and what is just adding noise.

What I am seeing in my own health right now

I am still working on my own health, one step at a time.

I am focusing on fat loss and weight loss, yes, but also muscle and flexibility. I want to feel stronger. I want to move better. I want to enjoy life more fully.

And one thing I have learned again and again is that progress does not always show up the way we expect.

Recently, I was disappointed to see that my weight was up. That is never the number I want to see. But at the same time, my inches were down by 1.5.

That is such a good reminder that progress does not always show up where you are looking first.

The scale tells one story. Measurements can tell another. Your energy can tell another. Your strength can tell another. Your mood, your sleep, your stamina, your clothes fitting differently, your ability to recover faster, your consistency with healthy habits… all of those matter too.

For homeschool moms especially, I think we need that reminder. It is easy to get discouraged when one visible result is slow. But that does not mean nothing is happening.

Keep going. Small steps count.

Movement still matters, even when it is not perfect

This summer I started a walking challenge, and I have been walking close to a mile a couple times a week to start. That may not sound huge, but it is a beginning, and beginnings matter.

I have also kept playing pickleball three times a week, even with pain.

Now, I am also paying attention to that pain, still in PT  and looking into other options for support like dry needling, acupuncture, and PRP. So this is not me saying to ignore what your body is telling you. It is me saying that sometimes movement is still worth pursuing, even if it does not look ideal.

Sometimes we think exercise only counts if it is intense, structured, or impressive. But a walk counts. Stretching counts. Strength work counts. Playing pickleball with friends counts. Moving your body because you want to keep living your life well counts.

It does not have to be perfect to be good for you.

The basics are what I keep recommending to others too

I noticed this recently while helping a friend.

When she needed support, where did we start?

Not with the most complicated plan.

Not with a giant list of things to buy.

Not with fear.

We started with sleep, eating enough nourishing food, hydration, and movement.

Because those things still matter.

That is often where the real momentum begins.

When your body is undernourished, dehydrated, stressed out, and exhausted, it is hard to feel better no matter how many extra things you add in. Foundations do not solve everything overnight, but they give your body support it can actually use.

And no worries if this sounds almost too basic. That is kind of the point.

We do not need to do everything. We need to start with what matters most.

Why homeschool moms especially need this reminder

Homeschool moms are good at carrying a lot. Moms in general are good at carrying a lot.

We think ahead. We plan meals. We manage appointments. We teach lessons. We clean up messes. We keep track of supplies, schedules, attitudes, laundry, and the random question no one else seems to know the answer to.

And because we are used to doing a lot, it can feel natural to approach wellness the same way.

Make a better chart. Follow a better system. Add a better routine. Push harder. Try more.

But what if this summer could be different?

What if instead of piling on more pressure, you gave yourself permission to do the basics well?

What if your next wellness step was simply drinking more water?

What if it was eating a solid breakfast with protein?

What if it was getting outside for ten minutes?

What if it was going to bed earlier instead of scrolling longer?

What if it was making one or two simple swaps instead of trying to reinvent your whole life by Tuesday?

That is real life wellness.

It is not glamorous, but it works.

Simple does not mean ineffective

I think sometimes we dismiss the basics because they feel too ordinary.

Water is not exciting.

Sleep is not trendy.

Protein is not a miracle.

A walk around the block is not dramatic.

But simple is not the same as ineffective.

In fact, some of the most powerful things we can do are the things we repeat often.

A body that gets rested more regularly will usually respond better.

A person who drinks enough water will often feel better.

A mom who eats enough during the day is less likely to crash at night and inhale chocolate because she is running on fumes. Ask me how I know.

A little movement done consistently can change more than a perfect plan done twice.

You do not need a complicated wellness life to make progress.

You need supportive rhythms.

Back to the basics for summer

If summer feels like a good time for a reset, here is a simple place to start.

Pick one or two basics and focus there first.

Maybe that means:

Going to bed 30 minutes earlier

Keeping a water bottle with you during the day

Adding more protein to breakfast and lunch

Walking a few times a week

Getting outside in the morning sun

Stretching for five minutes before bed

Reducing some of the wellness clutter and focusing on what actually helps

You do not need to overhaul everything.

Start small and grow.

That is what tends to work best in real life anyway.

The wellness basics still matter

So if you have been feeling behind, overwhelmed, or frustrated with your progress, let this be your reminder:

You do not need to chase every new thing.

You do not need a more complicated plan.

You do not need to do it all.

Come back to the basics.

Sleep. Hydration. Nourishing food. Movement. Stress support. Simple rhythms.

Those things still matter in June.

They still matter in summer.

And they still matter even if your results are slower than you hoped, your routines are not perfect, or life feels a little messy right now.

Small steps are still steps.

Progress is still progress.

And the basics are still worth building on.

From Computer Programmer to Health and Wellness Educator

Hey there! Thanks for stopping by! I’m Allison, momma to Jackson, Connor, Brady, and Keegan, married to Peter. We live in a Philly suburb here in Pennsylvania. Our life is beautiful and crazy, but we love each other, despite all the wrestling matches my boys host. We’re definitely a work in progress.

A little about me and how I got here...

I started out at Villanova for accounting, but soon found myself as a computer programmer creating websites in the mid-’90s. That lasted a few years before I decided to be a stay-at-home mom and I’ve never looked back!

In my 20s, I struggled with endometriosis, which began my journey into health and wellness—my true passion. I even blogged about eliminating an ovarian cyst through fasting! Now, I have a strong desire to help others by sharing my story and showing there's a better way.

Fast forward to my first son, Jackson. When he was a toddler, he decided to spray Shower Power in his mouth! Let’s just say Poison Control and I were good friends back then. Although I started my journey in the '90s with food, I didn’t fully connect the dots between cleaning chemicals and health until much later.

Today, I’m navigating life as a homeschool mom of one teen, a college mom, and I’ve just recently seen my two oldest boys get married! We also have two adorable mini poodles—our "girls"—to balance out the boy chaos. Homeschooling only one might seem simpler, but I’m busier than ever, balancing life and staying connected with my older boys.

I thoroughly enjoy teaching and sharing my love for natural health, fitness, and homeschooling. Fresh milled flour has become a recent passion of mine. I love baking and with all the poorly processed flours out there, it’s no wonder so many are gluten-sensitive. I’m far from perfect!

I’m passionate about empowering moms, especially homeschool moms over 35 with lively children, so they can take charge of their family's health.

If that’s you, get in touch—I’d love to help.

Here is my story on YouTube.
