Somehow we've reached that part of summer where everyone starts asking, "Are you ready for school yet?"
And honestly? Not really. 😂
The school room isn't completely done. There are still things to organize. Brady is getting ready to head back to college. Keegan is starting his first job. There are logistics to figure out.
But summer isn't over.
There are still pool afternoons. Still day trips. Still dinners outside. Still time to sit and enjoy the people in my house.
And I'm learning that the best parts of summer were never on my to-do list.
The Summer I Thought I'd Have
Back in June, I had visions of a beautifully organized school space and a perfectly prepared start to the year. I imagined walking into my school room in August and feeling that satisfying click of everything in its place—labels on bins, supplies sorted, curriculum laid out, ready to go.
Some of that happened. Truly.
But some of it is still waiting. The shelves aren't completely reorganized. There are still stacks of things that need homes. The school year will start, and I'll still be tweaking and adjusting.
And here's the thing I keep reminding myself: that's okay.
Because somewhere between the plans and real life, something better happened.
The Unexpected Highlights That Actually Mattered
The summer that showed up wasn't the one I outlined in my planner.
It was VBS mornings with Keegan. It was Peter and Brady coming home from their mission trip with stories that kept us laughing around the dinner table. It was convention—hours of learning and connection that filled my cup in ways I didn't expect. It was late-night dancing in my kitchen with teenagers who are somehow taller than me now. It was friends showing up for a pool party on a random Thursday afternoon.
It was feeding teenage boys who eat like they're training for a sport (they're not). It was early morning pickleball games before the heat got unbearable. It was my poodles trying to survive the Texas heat by finding the shadiest spot in the yard and refusing to move.
It was a lot of small, ordinary moments that filled the space where my perfect plans used to be.
The calendar didn't look exactly how I imagined it. But it was full. Really full.
When You Realize Summer Looks Different Every Year
Having kids grow up means every summer feels a little different. You start realizing you don't have unlimited summers where everyone is home. Brady's heading back to college soon. Keegan's navigating his first job. Peter's already graduated. The seasons are shifting, and there's something bittersweet about that.
Instead of rushing toward the next thing, I'm trying to notice what's right in front of me.
The way Keegan laughs. The stories Brady brings home. The fact that we're still all here, still eating dinner together, still making memories.
August doesn't have to be a countdown to fall. It can be its own season—a sweet in-between where summer is still happening, but you can already feel the shift coming.
This Is Actually a Wellness Thing
Here's what nobody tells you: wellness isn't just about the routines, the habits, and the products you use (though those matter too).
Sometimes wellness is:
- Sitting by the pool for an hour without checking your phone
- Saying yes to a day trip even though your to-do list is long
- Eating dinner with your family, messy and loud and present
- Laughing at teenagers taking over your kitchen
- Letting the school room wait one more week
- Being here instead of being productive
A healthy life isn't just what we accomplish. It's what we experience.
It's the moments we're actually present for. The conversations we have. The people we're with. The joy we let ourselves feel instead of rushing past it to get to the next thing on the list.
That's real wellness. That's the stuff that actually fills your cup.
August Doesn't Have to Be a Countdown
I still have a school room to finish. I still have things on my list. I still have logistics to work out before fall officially arrives.
But I'm reminding myself (and maybe you need this too) that August doesn't have to be a countdown to the next season.
It can be its own sweet spot.
A place where summer is still happening. Where you can still sit by the pool. Where you can still say yes to the day trips and the dinners outside. Where you can still notice the people in your house and be grateful they're there.
The school room will get done. The lists will get checked. Fall will come.
But right now, in this in-between season, there's still time to find the joy in what's right in front of you.
Don't rush past it.
