Spring Reset Your Mornings
Spring is here, and if you're a homeschool mom anything like me, your mornings might feel like a whirlwind. Between feeding poodles, wrangling lesson plans, and trying to sip your coffee before it goes cold, it's easy to start the day frazzled. But here's the good news: a simple morning reset can set the tone for calm, fun, organized homeschooling all day long. I've been there—with four boys (three graduated, one still in high school) and two fluffy girl poodles underfoot. Ten years ago, chaos ruled my mornings. Today? I've got a routine that works, even on co-op days. Let's talk simple swaps to spring reset your mornings and create that peaceful vibe you crave. You got this—one small step at a time.

WHY MORNINGS SET THE TONE FOR YOUR HOMESCHOOL DAY

You can't pour from an empty cup, right? Mornings are your chance to fill it up before the kids wake, lessons start, and life pulls you in a million directions. A calm start means less reactivity, more patience, and homeschool days that feel fun instead of forced.
Think about it: when you rush into Bible time or math with a cluttered mind, everything feels harder. But a reset morning? It sparks joy, boosts focus, and even helps with low-tox living by ditching stress-eating or mindless scrolling. Studies back this—our cortisol (stress hormone) peaks in the morning, but habits like gentle movement or quiet reflection lower it fast. For homeschool moms 35+, this is gold. We're juggling family, health, and education without the energy we had at 25.
In my house, bad mornings led to snappy tones with the boys and forgotten laundry piles. Good ones? We flow through history discussions and independent work like pros. Ready for swaps that make it real?

WHY CHAOTIC MORNINGS CAN WRECK YOUR ENERGY (AND YOUR GUT)

When mornings are rushed, we tend to skip the basics—especially breakfast protein. Then we try to “power through” with more caffeine, grab quick snacks, and wonder why we feel tired, puffy, and snacky by 10:30.
Here's what usually happens:
• Skipped or tiny breakfast (hello, blood sugar roller coaster)
• More coffee to make up for it (jitters + crash)
• More snacking because you're actually under-fueled
• Blood sugar swings that mess with mood, focus, and cravings
And real-life note: when blood sugar is all over the place, gut stuff tends to show up more too (bloating, irregularity, feeling “off”). Totally not what you want when you're trying to keep a calm homeschool day.

A SIMPLE “STEADY ENERGY BREAKFAST” FRAMEWORK

You don't need a perfect Pinterest breakfast. You just need a simple formula you can repeat:
Protein + Fiber + Fat
That combo helps you stay full longer, supports steadier energy, and cuts down on the mid-morning snack hunt.
Easy examples:
• Eggs + berries + avocado
• Greek yogurt + chia/flax + walnuts + fruit
• Overnight oats made with added protein + nut butter + berries
• Leftovers (yes, really): chicken + roasted veggies + olive oil drizzle
No worries if you can't do it every day. Start with 2-3 mornings a week and build from there. You don't need to do it all.

QUICK “BATHROOM/REGULARITY CHECK” (BECAUSE GUT HEALTH IS REAL LIFE)

Not glamorous, but important: if you’re not going regularly, your body is going to feel it. Energy, cravings, mood, even how your clothes fit can all feel “off.”
A simple check-in:
• Are you going most days?
• Do you feel fully done (not stuck/straining)?
• Are you relying on coffee to “get things moving”?
If any of that is a yes, it’s a sign to look at hydration, fiber, protein, and your morning rhythm. (Again: real life wellness.)

SWAP SCREEN TIME FOR A 5-MINUTE OUTDOOR WALK OR STRETCH

First thing: your phone. I know, it's tempting to scroll news or reels while the coffee brews. But that screen glow spikes stress and steals your peace. Swap it for five minutes outside.
Step out with the dogs (or just you), breathe deep, and stretch even better: take a quick walk. Touch your toes, roll your shoulders, feel the crisp morning air. No fancy yoga pants needed—this is real-life wellness. My poodles, Peaches and Daisy, drag me into the yard at dawn. Their wagging tails? Instant mood lift. Ten years ago, with boys aged 3-14, I didn't have pups, but I'd stretch post-workout to shake off sleep. Now, it's my non-negotiable before basement workouts.
Why it works: Morning light resets your circadian rhythm for better energy. Low-tox bonus? Fresh air beats indoor toxins from cleaning sprays or stale sleep. Try it tomorrow—watch your homeschool focus soar.

DITCH COFFEE CHAOS FOR A HERBAL TEA RITUAL

Coffee lovers, don't hate me. But that rushed mug often leads to jitters, crashes, and acid reflux. Swap for an herbal tea ritual. Peppermint, chamomile, or ginger—pick what soothes you. Or just water with lemon.
Sit in a sunny spot. Sip slowly. This isn't deprivation; it's intention. My current routine: dogs out and fed, then my water with supplements (simple low-tox basics) followed by more water during quiet time.
Pro tip: Prep tea bags the night before. It's a small swap, but it calms the chaos. Your body thanks you with even energy—no mid-morning slumps during math block.

TRADE MORNING CHAOS FOR "MOM RESET" ALONE TIME

Alone time? Yes, even if you're an extrovert like me. You can't teach from an empty cup. Carve 10-15 minutes for a mom reset before the family stirs.
Pray, journal, or just stare at the wall. I rotate quiet time—mornings now in a sunny spot, evenings back when boys were little. With toddlers to teens then, I'd get up early, workout, shower, then rotate through boys starting with the youngest. They'd do some independent work while I guided the littlest. No shame in early bedtimes for them (and you!).
Today: Post-quiet time, 15-45 minutes basement workout (I like Cathe Friedrich workouts). Shower if time allows. Result? I'm ready, not ragged. Sarcastic truth: Without this, my high schooler gets zombie-mom vibes. Start small: Set a timer. Watch homeschool cooperation improve.

CLEAR CLUTTERED COUNTERS FOR A QUICK GRATITUDE JOURNAL SPOT

Cluttered counters scream overwhelm. Papers, breakfast crumbs, yesterday's mail—it drains your vibe. Swap for a dedicated gratitude journal spot.
Clear one counter corner. Grab a notebook. Jot three thanks: "Grateful for spring sun, boy's smile, fresh oats." Takes two minutes.  I don't always love doing it but a tidy space helps me focus.
Low-tox angle: Less visual stress means less cortisol-spiking snacks. Spring reset: Wipe with natural vinegar spray. Boom—calm kitchen, calm mind for lessons.

END RUSHED BREAKFASTS WITH OVERNIGHT OATS AND PROTEIN PREP

Rushed breakfasts mean sugary cereals or drive-thru guilt. Not low-tox friendly. Prep overnight oats night before—whip up jars with oats, milk (or alternative), fruit, nuts. Grind your own grains for next-level freshness (pro tip: it's the processing, not gluten). Know what you're doing for protein at breakfast the night before: left over dinner protein? Eggs? Turkey/chicken bacon or sausage?
We do Bible/history/math pre-lunch now; post-lunch, independent co-op work. Ten years back: Boys ate staggered;
Fave overnight oats? Mix oats, egg whites, cinnamon, applesauce and your milk of choice and set in fridge overnight. In the morning put in a greased pie dish and top with blueberries. Bake 350º for 25-35 min.

MY REAL-LIFE HOMESCHOOL MORNING EVOLUTION

Let's get honest. Ten years ago: 5 a.m. alarm. Basement workout, shower, quiet time wherever (often evening). Boys up staggered—I'd start with 3-year-old while others did independent work. Tight ship for sanity.
Now: Dogs out/feed. Supplements/water. Sunny quiet time. Flexible workout (15-45 mins). Shower. Bible/history/math with high schooler. Lunch, then independence. Poodles add joy (and fur), but routine holds.
Pickleball time keep me moving; alone time fuels it all. Yours doesn't need perfection—adapt to your crew.

2. Wake 15 minutes early.
3. No phone till after reset.
4. Track wins in journal.
5. Adjust weekly. No worries if imperfect.

From Computer Programmer to Health and Wellness Educator

Hey there! Thanks for stopping by! I’m Allison, momma to Jackson, Connor, Brady, and Keegan, married to Peter. We live in a Philly suburb here in Pennsylvania. Our life is beautiful and crazy, but we love each other, despite all the wrestling matches my boys host. We’re definitely a work in progress.

A little about me and how I got here...

I started out at Villanova for accounting, but soon found myself as a computer programmer creating websites in the mid-’90s. That lasted a few years before I decided to be a stay-at-home mom and I’ve never looked back!

In my 20s, I struggled with endometriosis, which began my journey into health and wellness—my true passion. I even blogged about eliminating an ovarian cyst through fasting! Now, I have a strong desire to help others by sharing my story and showing there's a better way.

Fast forward to my first son, Jackson. When he was a toddler, he decided to spray Shower Power in his mouth! Let’s just say Poison Control and I were good friends back then. Although I started my journey in the '90s with food, I didn’t fully connect the dots between cleaning chemicals and health until much later.

Today, I’m navigating life as a homeschool mom of one teen, a college mom, and I’ve just recently seen my two oldest boys get married! We also have two adorable mini poodles—our "girls"—to balance out the boy chaos. Homeschooling only one might seem simpler, but I’m busier than ever, balancing life and staying connected with my older boys.

I thoroughly enjoy teaching and sharing my love for natural health, fitness, and homeschooling. Fresh milled flour has become a recent passion of mine. I love baking and with all the poorly processed flours out there, it’s no wonder so many are gluten-sensitive. I’m far from perfect!

I’m passionate about empowering moms, especially homeschool moms over 35 with lively children, so they can take charge of their family's health.

If that’s you, get in touch—I’d love to help.

Here is my story on YouTube.
