Do you enjoying young experiments with your kids?
Me: Sometimes.
I enjoy doing them in the moment. Let me explain.
To see my kids get into it, make guess/hypothesis, actually do the experiment and then play around with different scenarios. That I love! The thought process before: I’m comfortable reading to him, then I’d have to get up, get the materials and deal with clean up. Because I know I’m going to be doing the bulk of it. Maybe we’ll just skip it.
Today when I didn’t listen to that pessimistic voice and got up and I’m so glad I did.
This was the second experiment and he really got into it seeing where the different amount of salt in the colored water would be on the straw. (The water with the most salt would be at the bottom creating 4 different colors in the straw.)
Then he started messing around and seeing if he could start with the highest density salted water to create a reversed set of stripes and of course it didn’t work. I allowed him to continue to play around while I got back to history read aloud about William Penn.
So how was the clean up? Not great. He even said, “if I have to clean up I’m not going to do more experiments!” 😆 I did have him go back and clean up a second time. Salted water leaves a sneaky mess that you can’t always see easily. So I did have to go back to re-clean but it was worth it to see Keegan really getting into it!
So I hope you will take the time, even if it means a mess that you will ultimately have to clean up or makes your schedule off!
